Kohunlich

Jungle-set Maya archaeological zone west of Chetumal, famous for the stucco masks on its Temple of the Masks.

Kohunlich is one of the strongest Maya day trips from Chetumal, set in forest west of the city rather than on the coast. INAH highlights its residential, civic, and religious complexes and singles out the Temple of the Masks, where large modeled figures still preserve traces of red paint and celestial symbolism.

The site feels spacious and green, with plazas, palace-like structures, and paths through palms and jungle. It is less crowded than the headline ruins of the Yucatán, which makes the architecture easier to absorb. Combine it with Dzibanché or other southern Quintana Roo sites if you have a car and an early start.
