Dzibanche

Forested Maya archaeological site north of Chetumal, with pyramids and carved stairways.

Dzibanche is one of the best Maya sites within reach of Chetumal and still feels relatively quiet compared with the Riviera Maya's famous ruins. Its plazas and pyramids sit in forest, and the name comes from carved wooden lintels or stairway elements that once helped identify the site.

The ruins are substantial enough to justify the trip: temples, platforms, carved details, and the sense of a city partly reclaimed by jungle. Go early, bring water and insect repellent, and consider combining it with nearby Kinichna if you have your own transport.
