El Fuerte's main travel role is on the Chepe railway between Los Mochis and the Copper Canyon. The station is south of town, so plan on a short taxi ride rather than walking with luggage.
Los Mochis is the usual road and air gateway. Many travelers prefer sleeping in El Fuerte before boarding the train because the town is more attractive and the least scenic lowland stretch is shorter.
