Plaza Principal

The main plaza is the anchor of Juchipila's civic life and the heart of its festival calendar. On ordinary days it is a quiet, tree-shaded square where old men sit and children kick footballs in the evening. On festival days it is transformed entirely — bandas set up in every corner, food stalls fill the surrounding streets, and the town's relationship with its own history becomes impossible to ignore.

The most important celebration is the Fiesta de Santo Santiago on 25 July, drawing pilgrims and diaspora families from across Mexico and the United States. The January fair brings jaripeos — the regional style of rodeo — and bullfights over several days. In December, neighbourhood posadas move through the streets with music, food, piñatas, and fireworks in the colonial tradition.

A story
During the Fiesta de Santo Santiago on 25 July, the same diaspora community that traces its ancestry to this canyon — including families who settled generations ago in Gustine, California — returns here in numbers that briefly swell the town's modest population many times over. The festival honours the patron saint of the Caxcán people's old adversaries, then claimed through centuries of adaptation.
