Juchipila

Zacatecas canyon town on the Río Juchipila, shaped by festivals and Camino Real history

Juchipila is a small town in the Cañones region of Zacatecas state, set in a river canyon carved by the Río Juchipila. It sits on the old Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and retains a traditional village character largely untouched by mass tourism. The population is modest and the pace is slow, but the town comes alive with extraordinary intensity during its festivals.

The most important celebration is the Fiesta de Santo Santiago on 25 July, centred on the nearby village of Moyahua. Santo Santiago is deeply venerated across the region, and the occasion draws pilgrims and celebrants from as far as Gustine, California, where the Mexican diaspora maintains the tradition. The January village fair fills the streets and plaza with bandas, food stalls, mechanical rides, bullfights, and jaripeos — the local style of rodeo. If you visit in December, you are likely to encounter traditional posadas: neighbourhood processions with music, food, piñatas, and fireworks.

Just outside town on Highway 54, the spa Hotel Paraíso Caxcán is built over thermal springs with views of the canyon. The warm mineral pools are said to have healing properties and draw visitors from across the region.

Things to Do

Juchipila's main draws are its festival calendar and the natural landscape of the canyon. The thermal springs at the Hotel Paraíso Caxcán just north of town on Highway 54 offer a relaxing visit, with warm mineral pools set against canyon views. The town plaza fills with intense energy during the Fiesta de Santo Santiago in late July and again for the January fair with its jaripeos and bullfights — these are not tourist events but genuine regional celebrations.
