The town sits inside a river canyon carved by the Río Juchipila, and the landscape is the defining fact of the place. The valley walls are steep and rocky, covered in dry scrub and cactus, and the river runs along the canyon floor through the town and south toward its confluence with the Río Verde. Highway 54 winds through the gorge, and from any elevated point on the road there are views down into the canyon that explain why travellers on the old Camino Real de Tierra Adentro stopped here.
The canyon is best seen from the highway approach into town from either direction. To the north, the road descends from the plateau through a series of curves with open views across the valley. To the south, the canyon narrows and the rock walls close in. There is no formal viewpoint or hiking infrastructure, but the landscape is simply around you whenever you are in Juchipila.
