Playa Maruata (Main Beach)

The main beach at Maruata faces a sheltered bay protected from the open Pacific swell, making it safe for swimming most of the year. The water is warm, the sand is dark and volcanic, and the bay curves gently in both directions.

This is also an active sea turtle nesting beach. During the nesting season (September through January) you may encounter turtles at night or see volunteers monitoring the sand. The sanctuary is run informally by local residents — ask at the village if you want to see the hatchery enclosure.

A story
The main beach at Maruata is one of the most important olive ridley sea turtle nesting sites on the Michoacán coast. Between September and January, female turtles arrive at night to lay eggs above the tide line. A small local cooperative maintains a modest sanctuary — eggs are relocated to protected enclosures to keep them safe from both poachers and natural predators.
