Mexicali's craft beer scene has grown considerably over the last decade, taking advantage of the region's grain and the fact that beer brewing helps you survive the desert summer. Cervecería Fauna and Cervecería Cuauhtémoc both run taprooms in the city, and a clutch of independent bars in the Justo Sierra and downtown areas serve a rotating list of Baja and Mexican craft beers. Cafes have followed — the centre and the Calle 7 area have several places serving proper espresso and pour-over coffee, a meaningful change from the older dominance of instant coffee in this part of Mexico.
