Teatro del Estado

Mexicali's main performance hall, a striking 1970s modernist building

The Teatro del Estado is Mexicali's principal performance venue — a 1,100-seat hall housed in a striking concrete brutalist building from the early 1970s. The exterior is a low, fanned-out volume with sharply angled walls and minimal windows; the interior is a properly equipped proscenium theatre that hosts the Baja California Symphony Orchestra, theatre productions, ballet, and touring concerts.

Programming runs strongest in the autumn and winter months. The building also houses smaller rehearsal halls and an exhibition space that rotates art shows. A useful stop if you want to see what Mexicali looks like culturally in the evening, not just at the border.
