Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma

The Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma is one of Mexico's most important historic breweries, founded in 1890 and now producing some of the country's best-known beer brands including Dos Equis, Tecate, and Sol. Tours of the facility are available, taking you through the historic brewing halls, the bottling lines, and the company museum.

The old beer garden under massive oak trees, dating from the brewery's early days, is open to the public and makes a pleasant afternoon stop regardless of whether you take the tour. The on-site sports complex — built for brewery employees and still functioning — includes a baseball stadium where you can sometimes catch a game. The brewery is in the north of the city, easily reached by metro.

A story
The brewery was founded in 1890 by a group of Monterrey businessmen who had studied brewing techniques in Germany and the United States. They named it Cuauhtémoc after the last Aztec emperor. The Dos Equis brand, launched in 1897 to mark the turn of the new century, was originally called "Siglo XX" and the XX referred to the Roman numerals for 20. The Heineken acquisition in 2010 created one of the world's largest brewing operations.
