Teopanzolco

Teopanzolco is an Aztec archaeological site sitting within the urban limits of Cuernavaca, a few kilometres from the central plaza. The name means "in the old or abandoned temple" in Nahuatl, and the site was already disused when the Spanish arrived. The main structure is a double pyramid with two temples at the summit — a design that mirrors the great Templo Mayor in Tenochtitlán, dedicated to Tláloc and Huitzilopochtli.

The ruins were largely unknown until 1910, when artillery fire during the Revolution exposed them beneath an earthen mound. They are compact and easy to visit in an hour. The site is often uncrowded even on weekends, which is a relief after the busier ruins in the region.
