Malecón (Old Port)

The Malecón is the old port district and the most authentic part of Puerto Peñasco. Where Sandy Beach has become resort territory, the Malecón still smells like the fishing town it was: shrimp boats in the harbour, stalls selling dried shrimp and fresh fish, restaurants where the menu changes with what came in on the morning boats.

The waterfront walk is short — this is a small town — but the character is concentrated. The murals on the harbour buildings, the fishermen mending nets, the pelicans quarrelling over scraps: this is the Rocky Point that existed before the condos arrived, and it coexists with the resort development in a way that is sometimes uneasy but always interesting. The best seafood in town is here, at unpretentious spots that serve shrimp a dozen ways.

A story
Puerto Peñasco was a tiny fishing camp until 1927, when a Southern Pacific railway spur reached it from the US border. Within two decades, John Wayne and other Hollywood figures were coming down for the fishing. The old stories are all here in the Malecón: the shrimp boats, the ice-house smells, and a waterfront bar that claims to have served everyone from the Duke to various US presidents.
