The mountainous coast and the Sierra Madre behind it offer some of the best day-trip options on the Mexican Pacific. The south-shore beach villages of Las Ánimas and Yelapa are reached by water taxi from Los Muertos Pier or Boca de Tomatlán; the Marietas Islands snorkelling trip leaves from Punta Mita. Inland, the colonial mining town of San Sebastián del Oeste is a 90-minute drive into the mountains. Up the coast, surf-town Sayulita and the Four Seasons peninsula at Punta Mita round out the standard rotation.
