Casa de la Cacica

Rare 16th-century Mixtec noble house blending indigenous and Spanish building traditions

Casa de la Cacica was built for the local Mixtec ruling family in the decades after the conquest. It is one of Teposcolula's most unusual buildings: part palace, part colonial house, with indigenous stonework and Spanish forms sitting awkwardly, and interestingly, together.

The building now serves as a cultural centre, so access can depend on local hours and events. Even if it is closed, the exterior helps explain Teposcolula better than a museum label would: this was a town where Mixtec authority did not simply vanish when the Dominicans arrived.
