San Pedro y San Pablo Teposcolula

Mixtec Pueblo Magico in Oaxaca, centred on a vast Dominican convent and pre-Hispanic ruins

San Pedro y San Pablo Teposcolula, usually shortened to Teposcolula, is a small Mixtec town in the mountains northwest of Oaxaca. It is quiet by Mexican Pueblo Magico standards, but it has one exceptional reason to come: a huge 16th-century Dominican complex with one of the finest open chapels in Oaxaca.

The town's interest is compact and old. The convent church faces the centre, the Casa de la Cacica preserves a rare Mixtec-Spanish noble house, and Yucundaa marks the pre-Hispanic settlement that the Spanish town replaced.

This is not a quick add-on from Oaxaca city unless you have a car and an early start. It works best for travellers already exploring the Mixteca Alta, or for anyone who likes colonial architecture with indigenous history still visible in the stones.
