The main church of San Juan Chamula is one of the most distinctive religious sites in the Chiapas highlands. Inside, Catholic saints, candles, pine needles, and Tzotzil Maya ritual practice combine in ways that feel very different from the colonial churches of San Cristobal.
The village is a common half-day trip from San Cristobal de las Casas. Visit respectfully: local rules around photography and behavior inside the church are strict.
