Mercado Municipal

The municipal market runs most days but is at its best on Sundays, when vendors from the surrounding valley bring in local produce, crafts, opals, and leather goods. The market occupies a covered building a couple of blocks from the main plaza and spills into the surrounding streets on busy days.

The food section is the most interesting part: regional cheeses from the nearby dairy farms, fresh vegetables from the valley, dried chiles, and prepared foods including gorditas stuffed with potatoes and nopales, and enchiladas in the local red mole style. The opal and semi-precious stone section has a different character from the tourist-facing shops on the main streets — less polished merchandise, more direct negotiation.
