The parish church of San Juan Bautista faces the main plaza and is the oldest and most important religious building in the city. The baroque façade in pink quarry stone (cantera rosa) is typical of the colonial Bajío style — ornate without being overwhelming, with carved reliefs of saints in the niches flanking the entrance.
The interior is more restrained than the exterior: a single nave, gilded altarpieces, and side chapels accumulated over three centuries of additions. The church is the social and visual anchor of the city centre and functions as the parish church of the historic neighbourhood around it. It is open daily from morning through early afternoon and again in the evening.
