Museo del Ferrocarril

The Railway Museum occupies the old San Luis Potosí railway station and its surrounding yards, a sprawling complex that at its peak connected the city to Mexico City, Tampico, Laredo, and the northern mining districts. The collection includes restored steam locomotives, passenger carriages from the Porfiriato era, dining cars, and a variety of railway equipment.

The museum is popular with Mexican families and has a nostalgic, slightly dusty atmosphere — this was a working railway culture living memory ago, and some of the volunteers are retired railwaymen who can tell you things no exhibit panel can. The old station building itself, built in the 1880s in Moorish Revival style, is worth seeing for its tile work and ironwork roof.
