Teatro de la Paz

The Teatro de la Paz is San Luis Potosí's main cultural venue and one of the finest 19th-century theatres in Mexico. Built between 1889 and 1894 in a neoclassical style, it stands on the Plaza del Carmen beside the Templo del Carmen, and the contrast between the baroque extravagance of the church and the austere grandeur of the theatre makes the plaza one of the most architecturally interesting in the country.

The interior — when you can get in for a performance or a guided tour — is richly decorated with frescoes, carved wood, and ornate boxes. The theatre hosts the Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea and a regular season of classical music, ballet, and theatre. Even if you only see it from outside, the building is worth a close look for its carved stone details and the commanding position it takes on the square.
