By road from the US: The main border crossing is Nogales, Arizona / Nogales, Sonora, connected to Hermosillo by a fast toll road (about 270 km, three hours). The Santa Ana / Altar crossing is used by travellers heading directly to the coast.
By road within Mexico: Federal Highway 15 runs the length of Sonora from the US border to Sinaloa. Federal Highway 16 connects Hermosillo to the Chihuahua border, crossing the Sierra Madre.
