Plaza de la Libertad is the best place to read Tampico's old port wealth. The square is ringed by former banks, trading houses, arcades, and wrought-iron balconies that give the centre a different look from many northern Mexican cities.
Come in the late afternoon if the heat is heavy. From here it is an easy walk toward the waterfront and the old customs building, with enough cafes and street life to make the centre feel active again.
