Tampico

Gulf port city of Huastec traces, wrought-iron plazas, crocodile lagoons, and seafood.

Tampico is a Gulf port with more character than its industrial reputation suggests. Oil, river trade, Huastec history, old banking houses, seafood, humidity, and crocodiles all sit close together, which makes the city feel rough-edged but memorable.

The centre is the place to start. Around Plaza de la Libertad and the Old Maritime Customs House, Tampico still shows the confidence of a port that once handled serious money. A short ride away, Laguna del Carpintero gives the city its strangest urban wildlife, while Las Flores Archaeological Site preserves a small but important Huastec mound inside the modern city.

Tampico is not an easy beach resort and should not be sold as one. It is worth adding because a traveler already in southern Tamaulipas gets a real city day here: plazas, port history, crocodiles, archaeology, and a seafood market culture that belongs to the Gulf.
