Tamtoc

Major Huastec archaeological site on the Tampaón River, known for mounds, stelae, and sculpture.

Tamtoc is the main reason Tamuín belongs on a travel map. INAH describes the site as a major Huastec settlement, with pyramids, monoliths, stelae, mural painting, circular buildings, and stone sculpture, including the famous Venus of Tamtoc.

The site is broad and open, with the feel of river-land archaeology rather than a compact ruin park. It rewards a slower visit, especially if you are interested in cultures that sit outside the usual central Mexican circuit.
