Tamuín is a small town in the Huasteca Potosina, east of Ciudad Valles and close to the Tampaón River. The town itself is plain and low-key, but it sits beside one of the most important Huastec archaeological landscapes in Mexico.
The reason to come is the combination of Tamtoc, Tamohí, and the warm spring country around Taninul. These are not polished mass-tourism sights. They are quiet, hot, and spread out, but they give a rare look at the Huastec world beyond the better-known waterfalls of the region.
Tamuín works best as a day from Ciudad Valles with a car or driver. Start early, carry water, and expect archaeology and river-country atmosphere rather than a pretty colonial town.
