The Centro Cultural Mexiquense, on the western edge of the city, is the State of Mexico's main cultural complex — three museums grouped around a large landscaped park. The Museo de Antropología e Historia covers the pre-Hispanic cultures of the central plateau (Mazahua, Otomí, Matlatzinca) and the colonial history of the region. The Museo de Arte Moderno has rotating shows of Mexican 20th-century painters. The Museo de Culturas Populares is the best of the three, with strong holdings of traditional Mazahua and Otomí craftwork — textiles, baskets, masks, and pottery.
A taxi or Uber from the centre is about ten minutes. Plan on half a day to do all three properly. Free or very cheap entry to most galleries.
