Teotenango is the larger of the two Matlatzinca archaeological sites near Toluca, set on a hilltop about 25 km south of the city, near Tenango del Valle. The site is bigger and more impressive than Calixtlahuaca: stepped pyramids, plazas, an enclosed ball court, and a defensive wall on the steeper sides.
The hilltop position gives long views back toward the Nevado de Toluca, which is part of the site's appeal. A site museum displays finds from the excavation. Easily combined as a half-day trip with Tenango del Valle's market town below, or with a continuing drive on to Malinalco.
