Cenote Carwash — its proper name is Aktun Ha — got its English nickname from the taxi drivers who once used the surface pool to wash their cars. Today it is one of the most popular cave-diving cenotes in the region: a shallow open pool covered in lily pads and inhabited by small turtles and freshwater fish, opening below into an extensive flooded cave system.
Snorkellers can float across the surface watching divers descend into the gloom below; certified cave divers reach further into a system known for its ochre-coloured tannin layers and lights playing across decorated passages. The site is eight kilometres west of Tulum Pueblo on the Cobá road and has basic changing rooms and a small restaurant.
