Beaches in Yucatan

Tranquil, crystalline waters are what you'll find all around the Mexican state of Yucatan. Most beaches are wide stretches of white or golden sand bordered by summer homes and vacation rentals. Generally, there is no fee to use the beaches. Tourists are common in the area, but not overwhelmingly so. Here are some nice beaches to consider checking out during your vacation to Yucatan.

Sisal

This tiny fishing village was once the main port of Yucatan. However, nowadays this title goes to the larger and more popular Progreso. The name of the village comes from a fiber derived from Agave that used to be traded through the area. Being as it's not very crowded, snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing on the beach are all great, relaxing activities. The birdwatching is superb due to the many bird species that live in and pass through Sisal. It is also a nice place to go fishing.

There are a few delicious seafood restaurants that serve up fresh ceviche and cold beer daily. There are also camping areas near the beach as well as bungalows and standard hotels. To take a break from the beach itself, you can stroll through a park or nature reserve in Sisal.

Chelem

Chelem boasts a fine, white sand beach perfect for swimming, scuba diving, sunbathing, motor boating, and sail boating. The water is warm and usually very calm. It is an older town, but nonetheless charming with its small shops, cozy restaurants, and tightly packed houses along the beach. A car is not necessary in this area as taxis and buses are readily available. Local bars and restaurants are located near the beach and have some tasty fish dishes. There are no camping areas here, but plenty of cabins and bungalows for rent in addition to ecological and standard hotels.

Chicxulub

Due to the increase of tourists in this area, the beaches in Chicxulub are quickly narrowing. Still, the clear waters of these beaches are attractive for snorkelers and swimmers of all ages. It is a very popular destination for those trying to escape the cold winters of the North. The homes located at the edge of the shoreline are very nice; there are also parks and nature reserves in the vicinity. After spending a day at the beach, you may want to see the various archaeological sites such as Las Trincheras, a structure used to defend the area against pirates.
