The malecón is Champotón's natural first stop, a wide waterfront walk near the river mouth. It is best in the late afternoon, when the heat drops, fishing boats move on the water, and the Gulf light softens the town's rough edges.
There are bigger and prettier promenades in Mexico, but this one tells you quickly what Champotón is about: river, sea, seafood, and an unhurried local pace.
