The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is the main historic church in Champotón's centre. Franciscan missionaries built it in the 17th century, and its simple stone facade and bell tower suit a town that has never been flashy.
It is worth a short look while walking between the centre and the waterfront. The interior is plain but preserves older religious images, including a large painting of the Virgin Mary.
