The Convento de San Antonio de Padua is Izamal's centrepiece. Completed in the 16th century, it stands on a Maya platform rather than beside one, which tells you almost everything about how conquest reshaped the city.
Its huge open atrium is the memorable space: broad, yellow, sunlit, and out of scale with the quiet streets around it. Look inside for the religious art and the continuing pilgrimage tradition around Our Lady of Izamal, but spend time outside too, where the convent's mass is easiest to feel.
