Mount Scenery

Mount Scenery is the reason many people come to Saba — and it delivers. The trail starts at the upper end of Windwardside and climbs 1,064 steps (you will count some of them) through increasingly dramatic forest to the 877-metre summit. The lower slopes are dry and sunny; higher up the vegetation closes in and the air grows cool and damp. Near the top, elfin forest takes over: gnarled trees barely taller than you are, draped in hanging mosses and ferns, with orchids in the branches and land crabs crossing the path.

The ascent takes about two hours at a steady pace; the descent roughly ninety minutes. The summit itself is often cloud-covered by midday, so an early start matters — leaving by 7 or 8am gives you the best chance of a clear view over the other Dutch islands to the north. Guides are available in Windwardside if you want company or botanical context, but the trail is well-marked and most fit walkers do it independently. Bring water, wear layers, and don't underestimate how slippery the steps can get after rain.

A story
Mount Scenery is the highest point in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands — at 877 metres above sea level, it tops anything in metropolitan Holland, and even beats the highest peak in Bonaire. The Sefton Trail from Windwardside climbs through five distinct vegetation zones, from dry scrub at sea level to a cloud forest near the summit where mosses, tree ferns, and bromeliads envelop everything in permanent green.
