Blowing Rock

Volcanic pinnacle and dive site rising from deep water southwest of Big Corn

The most celebrated dive site in Nicaragua. A volcanic pinnacle breaks the surface roughly 25 kilometres southwest of Big Corn, rising abruptly from a deep sandy bottom. Visibility is regularly 25 metres or more, and the structure attracts large schools of jacks and snapper, nurse sharks, turtles, and the occasional hammerhead in season.

It is an advanced dive — open ocean, exposed conditions, and a long boat ride to reach — so trips run only when the weather is right. Both Big Corn and Little Corn dive operators offer it as a special two-tank day, typically for around USD $80–110.

A story
Blowing Rock is the eroded core of an old underwater volcano. The walls drop sheer to around forty metres on the seaward side, and a strong current sweeps past the pinnacle — which is what brings in the big pelagic fish, the nurse sharks resting in the crevices, and the eagle rays cruising the blue.
