Cerro Apante Nature Reserve

Cerro Apante Nature Reserve rises directly from the southern edge of Matagalpa — a cloud forest within walking distance of the city centre, though most visitors take a taxi or moto-taxi up to the trailheads. The reserve protects a fragment of the highland forests that once covered much of this part of Nicaragua, and it holds a surprisingly good bird list given its proximity to the city.

Trails wind through misty forest and up to viewpoints over the Matagalpa valley. The reserve is managed for both conservation and watershed protection — the streams that run off Cerro Apante feed the city's water supply. Entrance is minimal. The hike to the summit takes about three hours return and gives panoramic views over the coffee highlands.

A story
Cerro Apante is technically within the city limits of Matagalpa — the urban boundary extends up into the reserve — which makes it the most accessible cloud forest in Nicaragua. A city of 150,000 people has a quetzal habitat on its doorstep. The reserve protects the watershed that supplies Matagalpa with water, which gives it a practical justification beyond wildlife conservation.
