Selva Negra Coffee Estate

Selva Negra is one of the most famous coffee estates in Central America — not just for its coffee (which is excellent) but as a complete experience. The estate offers tours of the plantation that explain the full coffee-growing process from shade cultivation to wet processing; the combination of lush cloud forest, German colonial architecture, and the smell of fermenting coffee cherries is unlike anything else in Nicaragua.

The estate has bungalow accommodation set in the forest, a restaurant, and extensive trails for birding and hiking. The bird list for Selva Negra is extraordinary — resplendent quetzals, emerald toucanets, and dozens of cloud-forest specialists can be found here. Even if you're not staying overnight, a morning tour followed by lunch at the estate restaurant is a highly worthwhile day trip from Matagalpa, about 12 km north on the road to Jinotega.

A story
Selva Negra — "Black Forest" — was named by the German immigrants who founded it in 1891 after the forested highlands of their Württemberg homeland. The founders, Edouard Maier and his wife Katharina Braun, built German-style buildings in the Nicaraguan cloud forest and planted coffee under the shade of native trees. Their descendants still run it, making it one of the oldest continuously family-operated estates in Central America.
