Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella)

Playa Estrella, universally known as Starfish Beach, sits on the western side of Isla Colón, a short boat ride or bicycle trip from Bocas Town. The name is literal: the shallow, calm waters are home to enormous orange starfish — Oreaster reticulatus — scattered across the sandy floor in such density that they're impossible to miss. The beach is gentle enough for children, with no surf and warm, clear water.

The access road from Bocas Town is passable on a rented bicycle or motorbike (about 30–45 minutes), though many people take a water taxi directly to the beach. A handful of small food and drink stalls operate on the beach, making it a natural half-day destination. The starfish population has been somewhat depleted by tourism over the years — guides ask visitors not to lift them out of the water for photographs, as this causes stress that can kill them.
