Playa de las Suecas

Playa de las Suecas is a clothing-optional beach on Contadora's northern side, sheltered enough for calm swimming and far enough from the main resort area to stay quieter than the island's other beaches. The sand is fine and white, the water clear and turquoise.

The beach is a short walk through low vegetation from the main track that crosses the island. It is not signposted, which keeps the casual visitor away. Snorkelling around the rock formations at the eastern end turns up clownfish and angelfish in the coral formations.

A story
The beach's name — "Beach of the Swedish Women" — dates to the 1970s, when Contadora was a playground for wealthy Latin Americans and international jet-setters. A group of Swedish tourists allegedly became the first to sunbathe nude here, and the name stuck.
