Isla Verde Beach

Isla Verde Beach is a wide, crescent-shaped stretch of golden sand backed by coconut palms and the big resort hotels — the Ritz-Carlton, the Fairmont El San Juan, the Marriott. The sand is soft, the water is warm and clear, and there is enough gentle wave action to keep it interesting. This is not a remote, unspoiled cove; it is a proper urban resort beach, which means vendors, jet-ski rentals, and beach bars alongside the palms. It does its job extremely well.

The beach is public along its entire length, so you are entitled to walk and swim regardless of which hotel you are staying in. The quieter eastern end near Pine Grove gets the surfers; the western end near the big hotels is calmer and more sheltered. Either way, you are fifteen minutes from the airport by taxi, which makes this one of the easiest beach arrivals in the Caribbean.

A story
The beach runs right alongside the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport's outer perimeter. When planes take off to the north, they pass almost directly overhead at low altitude — a strange and exhilarating experience for beach-goers. The approach path from the south brings planes over the water, which means you can watch them glide in just above the waves.
