When to Go

Rincón has two distinct seasons. Winter (November to April) is the surfer's season: swells from Atlantic storms generate the powerful waves at Domes, María's, and Tres Palmas that put the town on the world surfing map. This is also the best period for whale watching, as humpbacks migrate through the Mona Passage. Prices are highest and accommodation books up; reserve well in advance for January and February.

Summer (May to October) brings calmer water, lower prices, and local Puerto Rican tourists on weekend escapes from San Juan. The beaches are still excellent for swimming and snorkelling, the water is warm, and the trade winds keep temperatures bearable. Hurricane season runs June to November; direct hits are relatively rare but worth monitoring. September is the statistical peak of hurricane activity.

Year-round temperature averages around 28°C. Rain can arrive at any time of year — brief heavy showers, usually followed quickly by sunshine.
