The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) is the strongest art museum on the island, in a 1920s neoclassical building in Santurce that originally served as the city's municipal hospital. A modern east wing, finished in 2000, doubled the space. The permanent collection runs from the seventeenth century to the present, with a particularly good holding of works by José Campeche, Francisco Oller, and the twentieth-century Generación del Cincuenta.
Behind the museum is a 5-acre sculpture garden, free to enter, with works by Lindsey Daen, Annex Burgos, and Jorge Zeno among others. The museum has a serious bookshop and one of the better restaurants in Santurce, Pikayo, on the third floor. If you spend a day in Santurce, this is the anchor.
