San Juan shopping splits between the cobblestone boutiques of Old San Juan and the malls and outlets of the broader metro area. Calle del Cristo and Calle Fortaleza in the old city are the dense strip of art galleries, jewellery shops, cigar stores, and rum specialists. The factory outlets along the Marina end of Calle del Cristo are favoured by US shoppers — Puerto Rico is part of the US customs zone, so American passport holders pay no duty on items brought back.
For larger-scale shopping, Plaza Las Américas in Hato Rey is the biggest mall in the Caribbean. The Mercado de Santurce is the city's main produce market and the Mercado Agrícola Natural in the Old San Juan Mondays-only farmers market is the place for local coffee, chocolate, and artisan rum.
