Café Cuatro Sombras

A small specialty coffee bar on Calle Recinto Sur that roasts beans grown by the owners' family in Yauco, in the mountains of southwestern Puerto Rico. The Cuatro Sombras name refers to the four shade trees traditionally used on Puerto Rican coffee farms — guava, ortiguillo, banana, and citrus — that protect the coffee plants from direct sun.

The pour-over and espresso here are the best in Old San Juan, and the cafe serves a small menu of pastries and tostadas. There is a second outlet on Calle Loíza in Ocean Park that doubles as the roastery. Both close in the early evening.
