Paseo de la Princesa

A wide tree-shaded promenade running along the south wall of Old San Juan, from the cruise terminals up to the Puerta de San Juan and around the base of the walls to El Morro. It is the most pleasant evening walk in the city — cafés and benches on one side, the harbour and the bronze Raíces fountain on the other.

The path is lit at night and feels safe well into the evening. Local artists and craftspeople set up along the inner wall on weekends, and a small ice cream cart usually parks near the Princesa building (the former municipal jail, now occupied by the tourism office, which is itself worth a look inside).
