Barrouallie

Barrouallie (pronounced "Barley") is a small fishing town on the leeward coast about 30 km north of Kingstown. It is best known for being one of the last places in the Caribbean where a traditional small-scale whaling fleet still operates — fishermen go out in open boats with hand harpoons after pilot whales and small dolphins, mostly for local consumption. The catch is sold on the beach in the late afternoon when the boats come in.

This is not a tourist attraction in any conventional sense and most visitors will find it confronting — but it is part of the working life of the coast and worth understanding. The drive through Barrouallie also passes the Black Point tunnel, a short hand-cut passage through volcanic rock dating to the 1810s and built by enslaved labour to connect the leeward sugar estates.
