Getting Around

The cheapest and most authentic way to get around St Vincent is by minibus — privately owned vans with route numbers on the windscreen, brightly painted and loud with soca and dancehall. Routes radiate from the bus terminal next to the market in Kingstown to all the leeward and windward villages. They run frequently during the day, fares are fixed and low, and the driver will stop more or less anywhere on request. Outside the city they're the best way to meet locals.

Taxis are plentiful in Kingstown and at the airport — agree the fare before you set off. For independent exploration of the leeward coast and the volcano trailheads, rent a car: small Japanese SUVs from local agencies are cheap by Caribbean standards. A St Vincent visitor's driving permit is required and is issued for a small fee at the rental desk on production of your home licence. Driving is on the left, the roads are narrow and twisty, and goats and dogs in the road are constant.
