The covered market on Bedford Street is the commercial heart of Kingstown and the easiest way to see what the island actually grows. Friday and Saturday mornings are the busiest, when farmers from the Mesopotamia Valley and the leeward coast bring in produce — sweet potatoes, dasheen, breadfruit, soursop, sugar apples, plantains, golden apples, mangoes — and pile it on tables under the red corrugated roof.
The upper floors stock spices, hot sauces in plastic bottles, dried fish, and the local arrowroot starch (St Vincent was once the world's largest exporter). Vendors will let you taste before you buy, and most are friendly with visitors as long as you don't photograph people without asking. The fish market is a separate building closer to the water; it opens early and is more or less done by mid-morning.
