Vermont Nature Trails

The Vermont Nature Trails climb through wet upland forest in the Buccament Valley, about 30 minutes by road from Kingstown. The main loop is a well-graded 3 km circuit that takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, gaining 300 metres of elevation through mahogany, palmiste and ferns dense with epiphytes. The forest is one of the most reliable places in the country to see the St Vincent parrot — Amazona guildingii — which uses these slopes as part of its protected range.

A guide is not strictly required but worth hiring; they know where the parrots roost and can spot the birds high in the canopy long before you would. Early morning is best for sightings. The trail also passes a viewing platform looking across to the volcanic peaks and, on clear days, down to the coast. Bring water, insect repellent, and shoes you don't mind getting muddy — the path is often wet underfoot even outside the rainy season.
