The Naparima Heritage Park, in the centre of San Fernando, is the city's main public green space and gathering place. The park contains monuments to figures in Trinidadian history and is surrounded by the city's main civic buildings. It's a good place to sit, watch the city go about its business, and get a feel for San Fernando's character — more working-class and less tourist-oriented than Port of Spain, with a strong community identity of its own.
The park is most animated on weekends and during the Carnival season, when it becomes a staging area for some of the events that make San Fernando's Carnival worth attending. Many Trinidadians argue that the Carnival here — known informally as "Sando Carnival" — is more authentic and less commercialised than the main event in the capital.
