San Fernando Hill

San Fernando Hill rises steeply from the centre of the city and offers some of the best views in Trinidad. From the summit you can see across the southern plains to the Gulf of Paria on a clear day, with the oil refineries and industrial installations of Point Fortin visible to the southwest — a panorama that captures both the natural and industrial character of this part of the island.

The hill is a public park with walking paths and benches, and is popular with local residents in the early morning and evenings. It's a pleasant half-hour excursion from the city centre, and the elevated position makes it the obvious first stop to get a sense of the city's layout and surroundings.

A story
San Fernando Hill was once far taller — the upper section was quarried away during the 20th century for road fill and construction material. What remains is still striking, but the original hill that gave the city its commanding position over the southern plains was significantly larger. The quarrying stopped not for conservation reasons but because there was simply less hill left to take.
